The landscape work of Ceniceros creates a world that looks inhospitable yet feels familiar. This is a world that I may have seen in film. Perhaps in a story that involved miners, in an area where the heat is high the air is dry and the only thing worth anything is somewhere under the hard rocks. A place with tales of explorers that have gone farther than their luck only to become legends of the ghostly type. Here the ground is crunchy and dry, the rocks are sharp and the horizon is endless. Without a single comfort this world offers us the gift of solitude. The introspective silence and clarity we all want but seldom get. The mind flies looking at these landscapes until we realize that art picks up where nature ends.
The objective representation is only the top layer in this work. Get closer to see that it all comes from the rich paint textures that lie beneath. In these landscape works the oil and grain textures as well as the colors give shape to the lines that create forms. The line of form moves fluidly like a geochemical transport that travels across elements. The texture and the color shape into petreus forms. On a micro level we see that these rocks are close to pure abstraction as there is no accurate representation. On a macro level we begin to see the dream become imagined and start to take form thru composition. There is an austere elegance in these landscapes.
There is one place in the world that is like Ceniceros’ landscapes. The Atacama desert in Chile is the driest place on earth. With nearly no precipitation Atacama is devoid of greenery. Ceniceros hasn’t been to Atacama yet it is a place that he imagined. In the desert of Atacama like in Ceniceros’ paintings the rocks once again are giving us abstraction thru the ideas that happen there. I have learned that Atacama is the testing ground for the rovers that will go to Mars. I could only think of film when I saw these paintings, clearly I came up way short.

El mundo fantasmal de los paisajes de Ceniceros
El paisaje de Ceniceros representa un mundo creado que es tanto inhóspito como familiar. Este es un mundo que he visto en el cine. Tal ves en una historia de mineros, en un area con mucho calor, sequedad, y donde lo único que tiene valor esta bajo las rocas. Un lugar con cuentos de exploradores que han ido mas allá de su suerte y se han convertido en leyendas fantasmales. Un lugar con tierra seca y crujiente donde las rocas son cortantes y el horizonte interminable. Sin una sola comodidad este mundo nos ofrece el regalo de la solitud. El silencio introspectivo y claro que todos queremos y tan poco obtenemos. La mente vuela viendo estos paisajes hasta que nos damos cuenta que donde termina la naturaleza el arte empieza.
La representación objectiva es la capa en la superficie de este trabajo. Acercándome veo que todo proviene de las profundas texturas que se encuentran en la capa de fundación. En estos paisajes la textura de los oleos, los granos de arena y los colores dan volumen a la forma. La linea de la forma se mueve fluidamente como transportada en una reacción geoquímica que viaja a través de los elementos. La textura y el color dan forma a rocas petreas. A un nivel micro vemos que estas rocas son lo más cercano a la abstracción pura ya que no es visible una representación. A un nivel macro empezamos a ver como lo soñado pasa a imaginado y toma forma a través de la composición. Estos paisajes tienen una sobriedad elegante.
Hay un lugar en el mundo que es como los paisajes de Ceniceros. El desierto de Atacama en Chile es el lugar mas seco del mundo. Con casi nada de precipitación fluvial Atacama no tiene vegetación. Ceniceros no ha estado en Atacama, más es un lugar que ha imaginado. En el desierto de Atacama como en los paisajes de Ceniceros las rocas nos dan de nuevo la abstracción a través de las ideas que ahi ocurren. En Atacama es donde se ponen a prueba los vehículos que irán al planeta Marte. Yo solo pude pensar en el cine cuando ví estas pinturas, claramente me quede muy corta.
