Ceniceros is a Mexican artist who produces art of universal values.
As I walk the halls and rooms of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a museum I try to visit at least twice a year, the idea of art’s universality comes to me. The exhibits there aren’t organized by country and the work shown comes from practically anywhere where creative minds were given the freedom to create. I know this is a bit utopian, but perhaps that is how I’d like to see it. The question in my mind is why or when does place of origin matter? Should this matter in the field of creativity?
An artists’ place of origin can be important as a reference of context. Minds want to know about the circumstances that lead to creation. I believe this is a big part of the reason why Cuban and Chinese contemporary art draws curiosity. What happened with artists that lived in constrained societies that allowed an output of creativity? I would hesitate to try to give an exact answer, however, I believe that what drives the mind to intellectual and creative endeavors is perhaps, universal? I know, I know, broad strokes but please indulge me as I may have a point. Humans are curious and want to know what is making our world change. For this reason some of the world’s most popular artists tend to be those who are creating the new, breaking conformity. Many of these artists have come from the Western World, in many cases from societies where innovation is important. I don’t want to digress, place of origin and historical reference matter because they provide context to the creative output. Yet when the creative output is of universal values what should matter is the idea.
Ceniceros was born in Mexico, a man of humble origins. As I explained in my previous blog post, Ceniceros is not part of the Traditional Mexican School. Does he decide that he does not want his art to take context from his national identity? I don’t believe so, he can only follow his creative impulse to create and follow his idea of the variables of the feminine form. His idea could not be any more universal, it is based in the human form. The context which drives Ceniceros to obsessively explore this idea isn’t his place of origin. It is rather his unlimited mind, the possibilities he sees and his desire to go further. He does not want to be a creator with many ideas, he wants an idea to be his own. He wants to break his confines and innovate around this “one” idea. Ceniceros’ art language is universal. His work’s place of origin is the creativity of his mind.

Ceniceros, un artista mexicano?

Camino por los pasillos y aulas del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, museo que trato de visitar al menos dos veces por año, y frente a mi esta la idea de la universalidad que tiene el arte. Las exhibiciones en MOMA no están organizadas por país de origen, el trabajo que se presenta viene prácticamente de cualquier lugar donde las mentes creativas han tenido la libertad de crear. Yo se que esto suena utópico, tal ves porque así lo quisiera ver. Lo que me pregunto es porque es importante el lugar de origen del arte? Porque es esto importante en el area de la creatividad?
El lugar de origen de un artista puede ser importante como referencia de contexto. La gente quiere saber cuales fueron las circunstancias que fertilizaron la creatividad. Me parece que es la razón por la cual hoy existe el interés por el arte contemporáneo de Cuba y China. Que es lo que pasa con los artistas cuando viven en sociedades cerradas, que fue lo que permitió el brote de creatividad? No me atrevo a dar respuesta directa, sin embargo me inclino a creer que lo que impulsa a la mente a quehaceres intelectuales y creativos es tal ves universal? Lo sé, lo sé, un punto de vista nebuloso más tal ves exista una verdad ahi. Los seres humanos son curiosos y quieren saber que es lo que esta cambiando el mundo. Por esta razón los artistas mas populares tienden a ser aquellos que están creando lo nuevo, aquellos que rompen con la conformidad. Muchos de estos artistas vienen de sociedades donde la innovación tiene importancia. Más no me quiero desviar, el lugar de origen y la referencia historica son importantes porque proveen contexto a el producto creativo. Sin embargo, cuando el producto creativo es de valores universales, que es lo importante? La idea es lo importante.
Ceniceros nacío en méxico, un hombre de orígen modesto. Como escribí en el articulo pasado, Ceniceros no forma parte de La Escuela Tradicional Mexicana. Es que acaso no desea que su arte represente su identidad nacional? No lo creo, el solo puede dejarse llevar por su impulso creativo a crear y seguir su idea de las variables de la forma femenina. Esta idea no podría ser mas universal, esta basada en la forma humana. El contexto que impulsa a Ceniceros a explorar obsesivamente esta idea no proviene de su lugar de origen nacional. Proviene de su mente ilimitada, las posibilidades que el ve, y su deseo de seguir avanzando. El tal ves no deseé ser un artista de muchas ideas, lo que quiere es una idea que sea de él, propia. Quiere explorar los limites de esta idea, innovar alrededor de esta idea. El lenguaje artístico de Ceniceros es universal. El lugar de origen de su arte es la creatividad de su mente.
