Ceniceros, an important artist

A question I get asked when I talk about Ceniceros is why I believe he is an important artist?  I thought this would be a good topic to write on the first article.  The vagueness of the question fights me for resolution.  What is an important artist?  For many, including the experts, the answer varies.  For some it is about the number of institutions that own the artist’s work.  For others it may be about auction house records.  For most it may be about the artists’ place in history.  Being an important artist then isn’t about one thing, it is the aggregate that matters here, or is it?

So I have “aggregated” Ceniceros, or rather some of his facts.  His career spans over 50 years.   He has won numerous awards.  His work is part of the collection of many institutions. Several books have been published about his work.  He has painted over 20 mural paintings in important public spaces.  Hundreds of thousands see his public work daily, not in Youtube but in Mexico City’s busy subway system.   Ceniceros has a museum in his name in his native state of Durango, it opened in 1995.  He was a close associate and apprentice of the late David Alfaro Siqueiros.  He has a wiki page, has been awarded the keys to a couple of cities, and there is a street named after him.  So you see with this, that not all important facts really work to make Ceniceros an important artist.  Ceniceros matters, well, because his work matters.

Ceniceros is the equivalent of a physics scientist that has dedicated his entire life to one topic for the enrichment of humanity.  His one topic is his artistic language, a line that can be traced back and forth in time.  A language that explores variables that push limits like cells that multiply.  I would describe him as a figurative artist with a focus on the feminine form and landscape. His art doesn’t tell a story, but rather the dynamics of his compositions evoque a dialogue that is symbolic and poetic.  His body of work, a vast one I may add, transcends and creates its own typology.  The great achievement of Ceniceros’ work, in my opinion, is that it exists, is substantial and recognizable .  Ceniceros’ work makes him an artist of importance.

Ceniceros, un artista importante

Una pregunta que recibo cuando hablo de Ceniceros es porque lo declaro como artista importante?  Como este es el primer articulo de este blog dedicado a Ceniceros me parece oportuno responder.   Empiezo a pensar y veo la trampa en camino a la adjudicación de calificativos de “importancia”.  Los temas que dan resolución son efectivamente nebulosos.  Que es un artista importante?  Para muchos, incluyendo los expertos, la respuesta podrá variar.  Para algunos tendrá que ver con el número de instituciones que cuenten con obra de dicho artista.  Para otros tendrá que ver con los resultados obtenidos en subasta. Para muchos más será un tema del lugar que este artista ocupa en su momento histórico.  Ser un artista importante entonces es definido por más de una variable.  Será el agregado de las variables el que defina dicha importancia? 

Veamos el ejercicio del agregado de datos de Ceniceros.  Tiene una carrera artística que sobrepasa los cincuenta años.  Ha ganado numerosos premios importantes.  Su trabajo es parte de las colecciones de numerosas instituciones.  Se han escrito varios libros acerca de su trabajo.  Ha pintado mas de veinte murales en importantes espacios públicos.  Cientos de miles ven su trabajo cada día, no por Youtube, en los murales que hizo en el sistema colectivo de transporte Metro de la ciudad de México.  Ceniceros tiene un museo con su nombre en su estado natal, Durango.  Este museo se abrió en 1995.  Fue aprendiz y colaborador de David Alfaro Siqueiros.  Tiene una pagina Wiki.  Le han dado las llaves de la ciudad.  En Monterrey hay una calle que lleva su nombre.  Este es el agregado de datos sobresalientes, y aunque los datos son importantes no me acabo de convencer que estos sean lo que califique a Ceniceros como artista importante.  Ceniceros es de importancia porque su trabajo es de importancia.

Ceniceros es el equivalente a un científico de física que ha dedicado toda su vida a el estudio de un solo tema, para el enriquecimiento de la humanidad.  Este tema es su lenguaje artístico, una linea que se puede seguir a travez del tiempo.  Su lenguaje artístico explora variables que buscan romper sus propios limites, como células que se multiplican.  Lo describiría como un figurativo de la forma femenina y el paisaje.  Su arte es libre de anécdota, la dinámica de sus composiciones evocan un dialogo que es tanto simbólico como poético.  Consistente de un gran volumen de piezas su trabajo trasciende y crea su propia tipología.  El gran logro del trabajo de Ceniceros es en mi opinión el simple hecho de existir, de ser sustancial y ser identificable.  El trabajo de Ceniceros es lo que lo hace un artista de importancia.
